A 3December Primer
Alias® is now planning the seventh 3December® in celebration of the 3D computer graphics (CG) community around the world. Juan Carlos Marugán, artist and Alias customer in Madrid, Spain, first conceived the idea behind this annual event in the late '90s. The concept suggested the date. No matter what the day of the week, 3December would dawn and light up 3D CG to the world.
The early years
Backed by Alias, then Alias|Wavefront, and in co-operation with its Dutch distributor Microhill, 3December made its debut in 1999 at the Dutch Academy for Film and Video in downtown Amsterdam. Word of the event spread quickly and more than 1200 people enjoyed the seven-hour festival of 3D computer graphics. There were workshops, presentations, a games area and the 3D Cafe(tm). The cafe provided a great place to sit back, take a break, and chat with other CG artists.
Interest and enthusiasm for 3December in Amsterdam exceeded all expectations. Alias responded to the interest of the 3D graphics community and, with the help of sponsors and a dedicated team of staff, decided to bring 3December to the world.
Y2K, the first-ever annual, global event
In the year 2000, 3December launched the first multi-national event. It brought together more than 25,000 people around the world across seven time zones. Other highly successful 3December events in 2001, 2002, and 2003 saw thousands more
attending this global event.
